Mental wellness is just as important as physical health, and the two are intrinsically linked – if you aren’t feeling well physically, this could cause a decline in your mood and, similarly, if you’re suffering with a mental disorder, it can directly affect your body’s health.
Here’s how to integrate some mental health wellness practices into your daily routine.
Physical activity
Walking, jogging, swimming, dancing, playing a sport – all of these things release endorphins in the brain and help make you happier by reducing stress, anxiety and depression. This, in turn, improves cognitive function and helps you sleep better. So go out there and get those “feel good” chemicals pumping in your brain with regular exercise.
Socialization
Everyone wants someone to connect with, and socializing is known to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness and, instead, offer a sense of belonging. While it may not be easy to get out there and be with other people at first, this can be a huge mood booster. It could be anything: mall walking with friends, starting a book or cooking club, or visiting your local senior community centre (most cities have these). According to Summa Health, research shows that your body releases endorphins during positive social contact – similar to the physical response after a hard workout – which gives a heightened sense of happiness while reducing stress.
Following your passion
We all have something which we’re interested in, such as an extracurricular activity or hobby that allows us to express ourselves, pass the time and do something hands-on. Having something to focus on, whether it’s reading, crafting, doing puzzles, music, arts, etc. can provide a sense of purpose. These types of passion projects increase creativity and improve your focus. They can also, in turn, foster social connections.
Gardening
The best part about this pastime is that it not only keeps your mind focused, it also gets you moving. Gardening can be an extremely rewarding activity – you’ll get immense pride seeing the fruits of your labour (and possibly eating them, too). It can be as simple as a few indoor plants (Bonsai trees are especially fun to maintain), or even potted edibles such as tomatoes and peppers. If space allows, create a small gardening plot and experiment with growing different plants.
Learning something new
Everyone has that one thing which they wish they had learned, and you should know that it’s never too late! With so many resources out there today, you have no excuse not to try out something new. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn a second (or third) language – apps such as Duolingo can be a great place to start. Perhaps you’ve yearned to be able to play an instrument, such as the piano or guitar – YouTube has a wealth of instructional videos that can help you pick up just about any instrument, from a banjo to a bassoon. Ask a friend who’s an expert at something, such as painting or knitting, to teach you their trade. You’ll experience great joy from picking up a new hobby.
Adopting a pet
There are animal rescue shelters in every city, borough and town, and there are countless animals looking for a forever home. Depending on your living situation and mobility, a small dog or cat could be the perfect companion to keep you company and give you some extra luvin’. Even a small lovebird or fish can be a welcome addition to your home. Pets significantly boost mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, offering friendship and providing a sense of purpose, which can lead to an improved mood and overall well-being.
Volunteering
Local organizations and charities are always looking for volunteers. Giving back can be a super rewarding way to spend your time, and you’ll find great fulfilment knowing that you lent a helping hand. Perhaps you can spend a few hours each week at a seniors’ home, hospital or church. Gather with friends and make crafts for fundraisers. Cook for a cause such as Bread and Beyond (who collect sandwiches for shelters) or sign up to volunteer at a local school library or Breakfast Club. There’s always a need and you’ll gain enormous satisfaction from the experience.
