As skin ages, it naturally becomes thinner and drier, making itchiness increasingly common. As we age, our skin produces less oil and holds onto less moisture. That leaves its surface more easily irritated, particularly during the winter months or in air-conditioned and heated environments. For many people, simple skin-care habits can make a real difference. To soothe itchy skin: ▶ Moisturize daily with a fragrance-free cream or ointment. ▶ Use warm – not hot – water when bathing. ▶ Choose gentle, fragrance-free cleansers. ▶ Wear soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton. ▶ Keep your fingernails trimmed to reduce skin damage from scratching. Hot showers, harsh soaps, dry indoor air and heavily fragranced products can all strip away your skin’s barrier, which protects against irritation and moisture loss. Persistent itching may also come from allergies, some medications, nerve problems, or conditions affecting the kidneys, liver or thyroid. While often a harmless irritant, an itch could be your body’s way of calling attention to a deeper issue. If itching lasts for longer than a couple of weeks, keeps you awake at night, affects much of your body or appears without an obvious cause, don’t ignore it.
