Finance It’s the COST, stupid The survey also noted that “the predominant factor behind negative travel intentions is, not surprisingly, the cost.” Of respondents without summer travel plans, nearly half (48 per cent) cited financial factors as their reason. Other top reasons for staying home were a general lack of desire to travel (17 per cent) as well as lifestyle challenges such as being too busy or not having vacation time (10 per cent). A number of travel deniers hedged their bets and said that they would be delaying their travel plans to the winter season. In the CBOC’s July 2025 surveys tracking forward-looking travel intentions, U.S.- bound travel accounted for 36 per cent of Canadians’ trips, down from 44 per cent a year earlier and 50 per cent in pre-covid 2019. Over those same periods, travel intentions to Europe and the U.K. have remained relatively stable – 27 per cent in 2025 and 26 per cent in 2024. Another area worthy of attention is what the CBOC refers to as ‘Latin America,’ used as an umbrella term covering the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, which appeared attractive to 26 per cent of travellers surveyed in 2025. NOTE: These figures reflect the future travel intentions of individuals surveyed in July 2025. CSANews | WINTER 2025 | 35
