BY ORDER OF THE BOARD Marjorie Heisler, Secretary What’s on our mind: Canada-U.S. relations Every year, we dig a little deeper into specific topics that we believe are of current interest to snowbirds. This year, we zeroed in on relations between Canada and our neighbours to the south. Specifically, we asked how the ongoing economic and political tensions between the two countries might impact travel decisions, either now or in the future. Here’s what we found: Like most Canadians, snowbirds are clearly paying attention to developments south of the border. But the majority of us (61%) reported that current economic conditions did not have an impact on the length of our winter sojourn. That said, 20% of us acknowledged that the economic uncertainty made them shorten their trip south. A further 8% reported that they decided not to travel to the U.S. because of the situation and 6% said that economic conditions made them decide not to travel at all. On the political front, the numbers are much the same: the majority of us (53%) said that ongoing political tensions have made no impact at all on their travel plans, 25% of us acknowledged that the situation led to a shorter trip down south, 8% said that they travelled to a different country because of the political environment and another 8% said that they chose not to travel because of it. Given these numbers, it’s probably fair to say that even though we’re keeping an eye on the drama on the nightly news, the practical impact has been fairly muted so far. Will that continue? Tough to say. A majority of us (76%) said that they were either “very” or “somewhat” concerned about the current U.S. socio-political climate. And of those who said that they hadn’t yet decided whether or not to travel next year, some 39% reported that the political environment was the specific reason that they were on the fence about their travel plans. It will be interesting to see how these issues develop and evolve in the coming months – we’ll likely ask further questions about these topics in next year’s survey to find out. If you found these results interesting, keep an eye out for our next survey – we typically send it out in the late spring or early summer. Make sure to fill it out and send it back to us: it’s your chance to make your voice heard! 36 | www.snowbirds.org
