CSA Online by Andrew Moore-Crispin Ebooks Ebooks are digital versions of books that can be read on a tablet, computer, phone or a dedicated eReader such as the Amazon Kindle, Kobo or similar. Using software such as Overdrive (overdrive.com) or the more user-friendly Libby app (overdrive. com/libby) for Android and iOS, you can browse your library’s eBook collection, place holds and borrow books and even periodicals to read on your device. While the selection and number of individual digital copies available varies widely among libraries (Google “cost of eBooks for libraries” if you want to dig into that topic), it’s definitely worth a look to see what your library offers. If you’re looking to learn the ins and outs of borrowing eBooks, libraries will sometimes run information sessions on just that topic. We also covered borrowing eBooks in issue 107 of this publication. That was – wow − almost four years ago! While things have gotten much easier in that time, most of the information in that article holds up. Tech resources Check your local library When we say library, the first image that comes to mind is probably of books, each adorned with a Dewey decimal number on its spine, stacked neatly on shelves by bookish librarians. It’s a reasonable vision to conjure, but there’s way more to libraries than just books. To say nothing of librarians. So, while getting lost in row upon row of books and periodicals certainly has its appeal, if you only see what’s on the physical shelves at your local library, you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Audiobooks Your library likely also has a selection of audiobooks available to borrow. Audiobooks are the evolution of books on tape or CD. The self-same concept, but delivered in digital, as opposed to physical form. The great thing about getting audiobooks from the library is that you can browse, place holds and borrow audio books without even having to go to the library branch. You’ll use Overdrive or Libby (which we talked about in eBooks, above) to search for, place holds on, borrow and listen to your audiobooks. 44 | www.snowbirds.org
