Golf By David McPherson PEI The home of Anne of Green Gables is also known as one of the best places to tee it up in Canada, withmore than 25 golf courses on this tiny island. There is even a course that pays homage to Lucy MaudMontgomery’s famed redheaded irascible girl: GreenGables Golf Club, located within PEI National Park. The other trio of top tracks to play are: The Links at Crowbush Cove, Dundarave Golf CourseandBrudenell River Golf Course. QUEBEC Stay at Mont Tremblant Resort this fall and experience a pair of golf gems: Le Geant andLe Diable. There is also the spectacularLeMaitre deMontTremblant. ONTARIO From the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to northern Ontario; Ottawa to Niagara; Windsor toWaterloo and all stops in-between, the most populous province offers more than 800 courses to pick from. To see some of the most beautiful fall colours, book a tee time in Sault Ste. Marie at Crimson Ridge Golf Course. If you don’t want to travel that far north, Muskoka is perennially one of the best spots in Ontario for fall golf, with splendid splashes of colour on all of the trees. A pair of tracks to consider in this popular cottage country of pines and granite include: Deerhurst Highlands and Bigwin Island – a five-minute boat ride across The Lake of Bays, a private course open to the public in the fall. ALBERTA Stanley Thompson designed a pair of postcard mountain beauties: The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf CourseandFairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Make sure to carve out time between games to spend an afternoon soaking in the hot and cold pools and saunas of the Kananaskis Nordic Spa. A brand-new course to add to your Alberta adventure: MickelsonNational Golf Club. The championship course, located just west of Calgary, opened earlier this summer. The first signature course, by the winner of 44 PGA TOUR events Phil Mickelson, is already getting rave reviews. SASKATCHEWAN Not known as much as many other provinces for its golf, there are still plenty of courses to choose from. TrySherwood Forest Golf and Country Club – a nine-holer just west of Regina − or Thomson Lake Golf Course. One other option is the family-owned Northern Meadows Golf Club – just south of Meadow Lake Provincial Park. Book early and stay at the bed-and-breakfast on site, run by the owners. MANITOBA This prairie province offers some good golf. Take your pick from the following: Clear Lake Golf Course in Riding Mountain National Park (a classic track built in 1928); Pleasant Valley Golf Club (located in the Pembina Valley); andOak Island Resort. BRITISH COLUMBIA Next to Ontario, B.C. boasts the most courses in the country. Withmore than 300 to choose from, it’s hard to pick a handful, but here goes. First off: the world-renowned Greywolf in Panorama. With the Purcell Mountains providing the perfect backdrop, the course is home to one of the most scenic par 3s − the aptly named Cliffhanger. TheWhistler area is another top spot to find some great golf. Check out the hidden gem: Big Sky Golf Club, just a 30-minute drive north of Whistler. A final course not to miss is a pair (the Ridge Course and the Predator Course) at Predator Ridge Resort in Vernon in the North Okanagan. So start planning your escape. Fall for fall one more time and see your province anew. Discover, or rediscover the golf courses close to home and inject some money into your local economy. By the time I pen my next column in the winter, here’s hoping that we are that much closer to a vaccine. Until then, stay safe, soak in the fall colours and play well.
