AStar Was Born Jackie Roosevelt Robinson, born a century ago on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia, was the American professional baseball player who became the rst African-American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball colour line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at rst base on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed him, they heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball. Robinson died in 1972 and was posthumously awarded the United States Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
