CSA Online Using an e-reader Personally, I don’t like reading for long periods on a smartphone or tablet screen. I much prefer the paper-like quality of a dedicated e-reader. Amazon’s Kindle devices offer the simplest means to borrow an e-book. Many books have a button to simply download to your Kindle. Choosing the Kindle checkout will send you across to Amazon’s page where you’ll get a free, time-limited copy of the book sent directly to your device. For other books and for other e-readers, there are a fewmore steps involved. To be frank, it’s a bit of an onerous process at first, owing to the number of e-readers, the number of e-book file formats and the digital rights management (DRM) required to loan, as opposed to sell books. Once you’ve navigated it a couple of times, though, it gets easier. Also, one of the many benefits of the library is that they’re there to help so, if it all feels a bit overwhelming, reach out to your local library. They might even have a class to help get you started. With all that said, here’s the basic process. 1. Install Adobe Digital Editions 1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions from this link: adobe.com/ca/solutions/ebook/digital-editions.html 2. Open Adobe Digital Editions. 3. Click Help at the top of the screen and choose Authorize Computer. 4. Click Create an Adobe ID and fill out the information to create an account. 5. Sign in with the Adobe ID created in the previous step. Click Authorize and then OK. 2. Authorize your e-reader with Adobe Digital Editions 1. Connect your e-reader to the computer using the USB cable it came with. 2. Your e-reader’s screen may ask to connect. Select OK, if so. 3. Your e-reader will now appear in the left-hand menu pane of Adobe Digital Editions. 4. Click thegear iconbeside your e-reader and select Authorize. ClickOK. You only need to complete the above steps once. Then, you’re ready to borrow e-books from your library and view them on your e-reader. 3. Borrow a book 1. Go tooverdrive.comon your computer or laptop. 2. ChooseSign Up, find your library system and input your card number and PIN (typically the last four digits of your phone number). 3. Browse or search until you find a book that you’d like to borrow. 4. Click to borrow the book. This will download it to your computer. It will come in the form of an .acsm file, so look for YourBookName.acsm in your Downloads folder. 4. Send the book to your e-reader 1. Double click the e-book (the .acsm file you downloaded) to open it in Adobe Digital Editions. 2. Connect your e-reader to your computer using the USB cable that came in the box. Go through the on-screen steps to connect. 3. Your e-reader will appear in Adobe Digital Editions. 4. In Adobe Digital Editions, click Library, find the book and drag it over to your e-reader. Once transferred to your e-reader, borrowed books act just like books you own. At the end of the loan period, they’ll expire on your e-reader and you’ll have to borrow the book again if you weren’t finished. Tip: if you’re a member of more than one library system (e.g. where you spend the summer months and where you spend the winter months), you can add both systems to OverDrive and increase your odds of finding whatever resource you’re after.
