Rebuilding paradise Although Hurricane Irma left Antigua predominantly unscathed, it devastated 95% of homes and buildings on Barbuda (pronounced Barb-yew’da), its smaller sister island. Barbuda is just 44 kilometres (a 15-minute flight or a 90-minute ferry ride) northeast of Antigua. Measuring only 23 kilometres long and 18 kilometres across at its widest, the island has only 1,600 residents.
