If you’re travelling, you can point your phone’s camera at a landmark and take a deeper dive than any tour guide would offer. Look through the lens and down the street to locate and get directions to the nearest ATM. You can also find restaurants, stores, hotels and somuchmore, complete with star ratings and other pertinent information from a wealth of sources, including Yelp and Google Reviews. There are even a couple of simple AR games to play, if you choose. The real power of Wikitude is the fact that it’s so easy for people and brands to become content creators and, to the people who create content, it’s more than an app…it’s a platform. Contributing isn’t required to enjoy the benefits of this AR app, however. Google Translate Free, Android and iOS If you’re travelling in a land in which you don’t know the language, Google Translate is already your best friend. While it isn’t actually an augmented reality app, it deserves a mention here because the AR feature which it boasts is particularly cool. In Google Translate, you can input text to translate from just about any language into just about any other language. You can also tap the mic icon and the app will attempt to understand and translate spoken language. Tap the little camera icon in the bottom left of the text field, however, and you’ll see what the camera sees on the screen. Line up a foreign language sign, menu, document or whatever else you need to instantly have translated. Like magic, the French/Spanish/ Japanese/whatever text turns into English, right before your eyes. When you’re travelling, you can even opt to download a language pack for your destination so that you’re able to translate even when you don’t have a connection to the Internet.
